Science

Science : The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.

The above is the definition of science from www.dictionary.com.

In my opinion, it's hard to justify teaching intelligent design/creationism as a science, but Kansas believes otherwise. This is one small leap for Kansas, one giant leap backwards for American education...

I feel that intelligent design is the exact opposite of science. The fundemental principle of intelligent design is that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power. There can be no legitimate science on an idea if the basis of the idea is that it is too complex for us to understand. One of the purposes of science is to study and learn from the world around you. As a species, we have learned so much from it and have improved our lives greatly through it. By teaching intelligent design/creationism, we are limiting the advancement of the science of life. Currently, evolution is our best explanation for the origins of life based on the evidence in hand. Even if evolution is incorrect, it doesn't mean we should stop teaching and stuyding it. In fact, we should study it more until we have conclusive evidence that it's either correct or incorrect. Many theories of the past have been incorrect, but by studying and learning, theories have been revised.

Back in the 1500s, Copernicus believed that the Sun was the center of the solar system and that the Earth revolved around it. His theory drew great criticism from everyone in that time period. Despite the fact that the church tried to suppress his theory, other studied it such as Galilieo. As a result, Galileo was able to prove that the Sun is the center of the solar system and that Earth revolves around it. If Copernicus's and Galileo's theories were successfully repressed, we would not have studied the heavens and the stars. Astonomy would be very different today...

I feel that the same thing is occuring today with evolution as with the study of astronomy in the 1500's. We must not let science be repressed or we may never discover the truth.

I feel schools should just mention both so students do know what is out there.

We will never know the truth because we live in Plato's Cave. Do you know the allegory? We think we may know it, when in fact.. we are in the dark. All we see is shadows. What we see is real, but we will never fully know the truth.

I don't know enough about intelligent design to say whether or not it should be taught in school, but in regards to the origin of life, it's just too darn complex to have occurred naturally! The idea that life was created seems more plausible to me.

Let's think about it from a different, alien-type perspective. Now, look at all the great things that humankind has created: computers, television, dvds, automobiles, pharmaceutical drugs and vaccines, skyscrapers, satellites, and so on. These are all complex things that they all just DIDN'T occur naturally, they had to have been created, right? Now if you look at the human body, it is much more amazingly complex than anything that humankind has ever created, composed of several extremely complicated systems: the brain, the cardiovascular system, the immune system, the gastrointestinal system, the reproductive system, etc. The human organism just couldn't have happened in nature, no matter how much time has passed. -Cecil
